Magic Mushrooms Dosing Guide: How Much to Take

Embarking on a magic mushroom journey? Our Magic Mushroom Dosing Guide simplifies the process, whether you’re microdosing for focus and mood or macrodosing for deep transformation. Find clear dosage recommendations, protocols, and practical tips to confidently explore the power of psilocybin.
Sero dosing guide and protocols

The most common question about magic mushrooms is also the most important: how much should I take? The honest answer is that it depends on what you’re looking for — a subtle daily lift, a social glow, or a deep, transformative journey. Each of those lives at a very different point on the dose scale.

This guide gives you the full picture: a clear dose chart from microdose to heroic dose, the protocols that structure a microdosing practice, and the factors that shape how any given dose actually feels. Start low, go slow, and use this as your map.

The single most important rule in this whole guide: start at the low end of whatever range you’re targeting.

How Much Is a Microdose?

A microdose is a small, sub-perceptual amount of psilocybin — typically 50–250 mg of dried mushrooms. “Sub-perceptual” is the key phrase: at a true microdose you should feel like the best version of yourself on a normal day, not high. If you feel altered, visual, or impaired, that’s not a microdose anymore — reduce it.

Because searchers use both units, here’s the bridge: a microdose is roughly 0.05–0.25 grams, well below the ~1 gram where noticeable effects begin. Most people never need a milligram scale for macrodosing, but for microdosing, precise measurement genuinely matters.

Microdosing: Benefits, Effects, and Protocols

  • Enhanced Clarity: Improved focus, problem-solving, and mental clarity.
  • Emotional Regulation: Increased resilience and emotional stability.
  • Boosted Mood: Less anxiety and rumination, more joy and connection.
  • Creativity: More innovative ideas, new perspectives, and flow states.
  • Physical Wellness: Users often report reduced inflammation and better sleep quality.

Many users credit low dose microdosing (along with personal effort and intention) with significant improvement in symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, PTSD, addiction, and other mental health disorders.

What to Expect

On dose days, most people report a gentle lift in mood, energy, and awareness without any impairment — more present, more focused, more connected. Effects usually begin within about 45 minutes and last four to six hours. Many microdosers also notice an “afterglow” the day after dosing, and find their baseline gradually improving over weeks of consistent practice. Because the effects are subtle and cumulative, tracking your mood is the best way to actually see the climb.

Microdosing Protocols

The protocol is simply your on/off schedule. The off days matter as much as the on days — they prevent tolerance from building and give you space to notice change.

  • Soft Launch: 2 microdoses per week, with at least 2 days between doses. Ideal for easing in.
  • Fadiman Protocol: Popularized by Dr. James Fadiman, the “father of microdosing” — one day on, two days off (dosing every third day).
  • Stamets Protocol: Named for mycologist Paul Stamets — four days on, three days off, typically for around four weeks, followed by a two-to-four-week break to reset tolerance.

Whichever you choose, take at least two days off each week and a longer break after roughly two months. If you want the full breakdown of the Stamets approach and its ingredients, see our Stamets Stack guide.

Choosing a Microdose Blend

Different goals suit different blends.

Lite Brite, our most popular, pairs Golden Teacher mushrooms with passionflower, CBD, and ashwagandha for mood and calm.

Connect Four is our Stamets-Stack-inspired blend for focus and cognition.

View Master targets productivity.

Boomerang is built for movement and physical performance.

“Microdosing has been the answer to my anxiety and struggle with ADHD along with improved overall wellness. I am a 40 year old female and choose this, effectively, over antidepressants. I have tried other blends, from Sero and other brands. Sero, Lite Brite particularly, is the best I have found. I started with a lower dose and found 250 mg to be my sweet spot. I generally do 5 days on, 2 days off. The Lite Brite blend is just perfect.”

Social Dosing

Dose Range: 250 mg to 500 mg

A social dose sits between a microdose and a macrodose — roughly 250–500 mg. It offers a light mood lift and a sense of connection, with mild sensory enhancement but no full journey. Effects begin around 45 minutes in and last four to six hours, often with a warm afterglow the next day. It’s a gentle option for a relaxed gathering or time in nature, best when you already know how you respond to lower doses.

Macrodosing: The Full Journey

Dose Range: 500 mg to 5 g+

Reserved for deep, guided sessions, macrodosing involves taking a high dose of psilocybin for profound healing experiences. Learn more about the most common macrodose ranges below. Our best advice is always to start low and go slow.

Also, keep in mind, dosing is not an exact science, and individual experiences can vary widely even with the exact same dose. Factors like sleep, stress, diet, timing, setting, and emotional state all play a significant role in shaping the experience. Sometimes a 2 gram dose can feel more intense than a 4 gram dose, depending on circumstances like emotional or physical state.

Only undertake a full journey under the supervision of an experienced facilitator, trusted trip sitter, or psychedelic therapist and read our Guide to Macrodosing for more info on the preparation, journey, and post-ceremony integration.

What a Macrodose Journey Feels Like

Effects take about an hour to arrive and last roughly four to six hours, unfolding in stages. The come-up can bring anticipation, mild nausea (ginger tea helps), yawning, and giddiness. The peak, around two to four hours in, brings vivid visuals, distorted time, and deep emotional states — sometimes joyful, sometimes challenging as unresolved material surfaces. The come-down softens into calm and reflection. In the days that follow, many people experience an afterglow — a lasting lift in mood and clarity, supported by heightened neuroplasticity — which makes it a powerful window for integration.

Benefits of Macrodosing

Macrodosing facilitates deep emotional processing, enabling journeyers to confront and release repressed emotions or trauma in a safe and introspective state. Psilocybin works directly on serotonin receptors to boost mood, calm rumination, increase brain connectivity, and enhance neuroplasticity. It helps the brain form new, healthier patterns, supports emotional regulation, and helps break cycles of negativity.

Countless studies have shown the incredible power of macrodosing psilocybin to treat depression, anxiety, chronic pain, OCD, migraines, and PTSD.

Practical Tips for Your Macrodose Journey

Set & Setting: Start by creating a calm, comfortable space—preferably with a bed or mattress you can relax on. Consider using a blackout eye mask to help you focus inward and curate music specifically chosen to enhance your psychedelic experience. Before starting, set an intention for your journey, as this will help guide the experience. However, be open-minded—remember that the medicine will reveal what you need to see, rather than what you expect or want to see.

Prepare Your Body: 10-15 minutes of gentle stretching or yin yoga before a macrodose can help ground you inti the experience.

Practice Breathwork and Embodiment Exercises: Familiarity with breathwork or meditation before a macrodose can help you stay centered and grounded if difficult emotions or memories come up during your journey.

Safety: Be sure to undertake your journey in a safe setting with a guide or tripsitter that you trust and is able to hold space for you emotionally and assist physically (bathroom trips, etc.) if needed during your journey. If you’re undertaking a solo trip, make sure to inform a trusted person of your plans.

Types of Psilocybin: Your experience with magic mushrooms varies widely depending on the strain of psychoactive mushrooms you choose. Not sure where to start? We recommend Golden Teacher magic mushrooms for beginners and experienced users seeking a balanced, uplifting, and healing experience. Read our Psychedelic Mushroom Guide to learn more about the most common magic mushroom strains and how to choose between them.

Post-Journey: Prepare your home ahead of time so you can return to a calm, cozy environment after your trip. That means a clean, organized space with all the cozy comforts that will make you feel safe and cared for. Have healthy snacks and comfort foods on hand, soft lighting, and minimize noise and bright lights.

Trip Timing: For an extra element of cosmic alignment, time your journey to coincide with a full moon, new moon, solstice, or eclipse as a way to connect to something bigger than yourself. Some users find these trips to be more powerful and expansive.

Frequency of Macrodosing: Macrodose journeys are used for profound healing and should be spaced far enough apart to allow time for integration between journeys. This will vary widely depending on your goals and the context of your journeys, but research suggests 3-4 weeks between macrodoses at a minimum. Consult with a trained psychedelic therapist for help facilitating, integrating, and planning multiple high dose psilocybin journeys.

Integration

Whether doing a micro or macro journey, integration is essential to make the most of your psychedelic experience. What is integration? During your journey, you may see, feel, sense, or intuitively know new information, new perspectives, or other truths. Some of it will make perfect sense immediately, and much of it will take time and curiosity to unpack.

This is where integration comes in: it means unpacking insights and integrating the lessons shown to you by the medicine into your everyday life. It means building new, healthier habits, releasing old patterns and beliefs, and introducing new ways of thinking.

Keep in mind, lessons and insights can be apparent immediately or may take weeks or months to fully emerge and make sense to you. Be patient, stay open to the lessons and insights that arise, and work to integrate these new truths into your life.

Post-journey, many people feel like they have to change their whole life at once; this can lead to overwhelm and frustration. Instead, aim for a 1% improvement every day – small attainable changes add up to profound transformation over time.

Individual Integration Practices

Individual integration can be done through small, realistic daily practices like meditation, breathwork, or journaling, a weekly or monthly commitment like therapy, or can sometimes look like a big one-off (such as writing a letter to a family member).

  • Journaling: Journal about what you were shown, ask yourself why this came up and what it could mean. Don’t judge your thoughts or try to control the message. Just be curious and allow the words and insights to flow.
  • Meditation: Let your thoughts flow. Do not judge or try to quiet them. Simply observe your breath and allow your thoughts to pass through you without getting involved.
  • Therapy: Work with a psychedelic therapist to uncover insights, process emotions, release traumas, and integrate lessons, new behaviours, and thought patterns into your life.
  • Writing Exercises: Write a letter to your younger self – give them the love, reassurance, and acceptance you needed back then.
  • Breathwork: Deep breathing can help to deepen your revelations and ground you in your body.
  • Time in Nature: Post-journey, you will feel extra aware of and connected to nature. Allow yourself to commune with the natural world – walk barefoot in the grass, swim in the river, sit against a tree, and get some morning sunlight as often as you can.

Most importantly, be patient. Sometimes the lessons hit later than you’d imagined. Trust that the lessons will come as they’re meant to, and once you realize them, strive to incorporate them into your everyday life.

Collective Integration Practices

Collective practices can be incredibly healing for an added sense of belonging, accountability, and shared growth. Some of our favorite ways to connect with others in your integration journey:

Integration Circles

These are safe, confidential spaces where individuals come together to share their psychedelic experiences. In these circles, you can:

  • Reflect on your journey and hear others’ perspectives.
  • Gain valuable insights through shared stories and experiences.
  • Build a supportive network of like-minded individuals.

Many integration circles are facilitated by experienced guides who provide structure and ensure the space remains respectful and constructive.

Group Therapy and Support Groups

Participating in group therapy or specialized support groups can offer more structured guidance for processing your experiences. Often, a group dynamic can be profoundly healing as you connect with others who’ve faced similar challenges.

Service and Community Engagement

Giving back to your community is a powerful way to ground your experiences and channel insights into action. Volunteering, organizing community events, or participating in collective efforts like park cleanups can help foster a sense of purpose, deepen your connection to the outside world, and help build positive relationships that only amplify your growth.

For more on integration, check out this Integration Workbook, which walks you through a comprehensive step-by-step practice to help integrate your psychedelic experience.

Factors That Affect Your Dose

The same amount can feel different from person to person, and day to day. The main variables:

  • Tolerance and sensitivity: Your natural response to psilocybin is the biggest factor — more so than body weight.
  • Body weight: Some early studies dosed by weight (0.2–0.4 mg/kg), but recent thinking holds that individual sensitivity and experience matter more.
  • Diet and lifestyle: Caffeine, hydration, and whether you’ve eaten all shift the experience; a fuller stomach tends to soften onset.
  • Medications: Some medications interact — see the FAQ below.
  • Sleep and mindset: Rest and emotional state meaningfully shape both micro and macro effects.

Harm Reduction and Safety

Psilocybin mushrooms are not physically addictive — a point Health Canada acknowledges — and tolerance builds quickly, which naturally discourages daily use. That said, it’s possible to lean on them emotionally, which is why integration and intention matter.

A few firm guidelines: don’t drive or operate machinery while dosing; avoid mixing psilocybin with alcohol or other substances; and if you’re new, choose a low-stakes day with no obligations. Psychedelics are not recommended for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder — please consult a healthcare professional first. Certain medications, including SSRIs and SNRIs, can also blunt the effects.

Managing Expectations

Ultimately, any psychedelic or plant medicine is just a tool—it’s not a quick fix or magic bullet. Whatever intentions or challenges brought you to the medicine, getting to the root of it is where the healing work begins.

The medicine takes the blinders off and reveals what you need to see: the thought patterns, choices, coping mechanisms, and behaviors that need to be addressed in your life to be your happiest, healthiest, most balanced self. Once you see these patterns, it’s up to you to make the necessary changes. Of course, psilocybin is a significant help during this process—it literally helps to wire these new pathways into your brain for sustained change.

Just like in therapy, the goal is not to keep you reliant on the medicine forever, but to provide support and tools so that you can continue to cope and function in healthier ways without relying on an external source. For many, this is why they turn to psychedelics as a last resort after years on prescription medication and find success in discontinuing their prescriptions. It’s a constantly evolving journey, and for some, this means they’ve received what they needed from the medicine after a few months and stop temporarily or indefinitely. For others, it becomes a long-term healing support.

An important thing to note: psilocybin acts as an unspecific amplifier. This means that whatever is going on inside—be it repressed emotions, anxiety, or unresolved trauma—can become amplified so that you will notice it. What is normally a low-level emotion may become a more pronounced feeling of anxiety, sadness, or joy. Once it’s brought to your awareness, you can explore what might be causing it and change it. This process can be incredibly liberating, as it’s like seeing the truth in glaring full color.

Once we see the truth, we can do things differently. And for those who truly want to heal and grow, the ability to face and address the truth is a crucial step.

FAQ's

How do I determine the correct dose for me?

Start low and adjust upward slowly across separate sessions. Your ideal dose depends on your sensitivity, experience, and goal — not a fixed formula. For microdosing, 75–125 mg is a sensible starting range; for a first macrodose, 0.5–1 g. Assess how you respond before going higher.

How often can I take magic mushrooms?

For microdosing, most protocols run two to five days per week with regular breaks to prevent tolerance. For macrodosing, wait at least three to four weeks between journeys to allow for integration and to let tolerance reset.

Does body weight affect the dose?

Less than people assume. While some early research dosed by body weight, current thinking is that individual sensitivity and prior experience are stronger predictors of how a dose will feel. When in doubt, start low regardless of size.

Can I take magic mushrooms with antidepressants?

If you take SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs, you may find psilocybin's effects noticeably weaker, since both act on the serotonin system. There's no strong evidence that the combination is dangerous, but the experience can be dampened — and you should always check with a medical professional before combining psilocybin with any medication.

Can you take too much?

While a fatal overdose from psilocybin is considered extremely unlikely, taking too much can lead to an overwhelming, frightening experience. The risk of a "bad trip" rises sharply at higher doses, which is exactly why preparation, a trusted sitter, and starting low matter so much.

Where can I buy magic mushrooms in Canada?

You can buy shrooms online in Canada with Sero. Sero is Canada's leading brand for ethically sourced, potency tested micro and macrodosing products. Explore our line or reach out to the Sero team if you have any questions.
