Understanding Magic Mushrooms

For centuries, Indigenous communities have used magic mushrooms in healing and spiritual ceremonies. Today, clinical trials are unveiling their incredible potential to treat conditions like depression and anxiety, PTSD, OCD, chronic pain, migraines, and end-of-life anxiety. It is very exciting that as the field of psychedelic research continues to grow, they’ve even started looking at conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

Microdosing

Dose Range: 50–250 mg dried mushrooms

Microdosing involves consuming small, sub-perceptual amounts of psychedelic mushrooms, typically between 50–250 mg. At this dose, you should be able to function normally without any impairment or disruption. Instead, you will likely notice enhanced focus, creativity, emotional clarity, a boosted mood, and greater empathy. Basically, you on a great day.

Benefits of Microdosing:

  • Enhanced Clarity: Improved focus, problem-solving, and mental clarity.
  • Emotional Regulation: Increased resilience and emotional stability.
  • Boosted Mood: Less anxiety and rumination, more joy and connection.
  • Creativity: More innovative ideas, new perspectives, and flow states.
  • Physical Wellness: Users often report reduced inflammation and better sleep quality.

Many users credit low dose microdosing (along with personal effort and intention) with significant improvement in symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, PTSD, addiction, and other mental health disorders.

Magic Mushrooms Dose Guide – Microdosing

75 mg – If you’ve never microdosed before or you know you have a low tolerance, this is a good place to start. Most people find this level too low, but it’s always better to start low and increase if needed.

125 mg – This is the sweet spot for most people and our most popular microdose level.

250 mg – If you find 125 mg completely unnoticeable, experiment with going up to 250 mg. This dose works well for those with a naturally higher tolerance or users who’ve been microdosing for a while.

All Sero Microdosing Capsules are available in each of these popular dosages so you can easily find the dose that works best for you.

What to Expect While Microdosing

Dose Days: Most users report a subtle yet noticeable lift in mood, perception, energy, and awareness, all without feeling impaired. Microdosers often describe feeling more connected to nature and others, more energetic and empathetic, and more present and focused. They also experience enhanced mental clarity, greater self-awareness, and an improved ability to observe their thoughts and the world around them—essentially, they see everything more clearly. Immediate effects usually begin within 45 minutes and last between 4 to 6 hours.

Non-Dose Days: Many microdosers experience an “afterglow” the day after a dose day. Some people enjoy these day-after effects even more than their dose days. Two days of non-dosing will bring you back to baseline.

Over Time: As you continue to microdose, it is important reflect on whether your baseline is improving. Many people report noticeable, wide-ranging benefits, such as elevated mood, sharper focus, enhanced memory, a natural inclination towards healthier habits, and a deeper sense of engagement and presence in their daily lives.

If you’re microdosing for mood, we recommend integrating a mood tracker into your practice. This will help you monitor your mood metrics over time and see the gradual climb as you go.

Microdosing Protocols

  1. Soft Launch Protocol: If you are just starting your microdose journey, we recommend starting with 2 microdoses per week, with at least 2 days in between each dose. This gradual introduction allows you to gauge your body’s response without overwhelming your system.
  2. Fadiman Protocol: Recommended by Dr. James Fadiman aka the “Father of Microdosing”, this protocol involves microdosing every third day – 1 day on, 2 days off.
  3. Stamets Protocol: Named after mycologist Paul Stamets, this protocol recommends a schedule of 5 days on, 2 days off for 4 weeks. Paul then recommends a break of 2 to 4 weeks to avoid building up a tolerance in the body.

Learn more about the Stamets Protocol in our blog and try the Stamets stack for yourself in Connect Four, our microdose formulation inspired by the Stamets Stack. Created to enhance cognitive function and promote neurogenesis, it’s formulated with optimized amounts of Golden Teacher magic mushrooms, lion’s mane, and niacin for the brain-boosting elixir touted and proven by Paul Stamets and many users around the world.

No matter what protocol you pick, we recommend taking at least 2 days off per week, and taking at least a 1 week break after every 2 months of microdosing.

Factors Impacting Microdosing:

  • Diet and Lifestyle: Caffeine, meal timing, and hydration can influence your experience.
  • Medications and Supplements: Certain medications and supplements may dampen or heighten your experience. Please double check for any contraindications.
  • Sleep: Restful sleep enhances the subtle effects of microdosing.
  • Tolerance: Your natural sensitivity to psilocybin will determine your ideal dose.

Social Dosing

Dose Range: 250 mg to 500 mg

Social dosing offers a slight boost in mood and connectedness. While the effects remain subtle, users may notice heightened sensory awareness and mild visual enhancements. This dose is perfect for a gathering with friends or a nature outing.

What to Expect:

  • Onset: Effects begin around 45 minutes post-consumption.
  • Duration: 4–6 hours of gentle enhancement.

Afterglow: Subtle positivity and emotional warmth may linger for another day post-dose.

Macrodosing

Dose Range: 500 mg to 5 g+

Reserved for deep, guided sessions, macrodosing involves taking a high dose of psilocybin for profound healing experiences. Learn more about the most common macrodose ranges below. Our best advice is always to start low and go slow.

Also, keep in mind, dosing is not an exact science, and individual experiences can vary widely even with the exact same dose. Factors like sleep, stress, diet, timing, setting, and emotional state all play a significant role in shaping the experience. Sometimes a 2 gram dose can feel more intense than a 4 gram dose, depending on circumstances like emotional or physical state.

Only undertake a full journey under the supervision of an experienced facilitator, trusted trip sitter, or psychedelic therapist and read our Guide to Macrodosing for more info on the preparation, journey, and post-ceremony integration.

Benefits of Macrodosing

Macrodosing facilitates deep emotional processing, enabling journeyers to confront and release repressed emotions or trauma in a safe and introspective state. Psilocybin works directly on serotonin receptors to boost mood, calm rumination, increase brain connectivity, and enhance neuroplasticity. It helps the brain form new, healthier patterns, supports emotional regulation, and helps break cycles of negativity.

Countless studies have shown the incredible power of macrodosing psilocybin to treat depression, anxiety, chronic pain, OCD, migraines, and PTSD.

Mushroom Dosage Guide: Macrodosing

Half Dose – 500 mg to 1 g

Good For: Beginners or those seeking a gentle introduction to psychedelics. This medium dose is ideal for light emotional processing, creative exploration, or enjoying a subtle mood enhancement.

What to Expect: A mild but noticeable body high and feelings of lightness or giddiness. Those with lower tolerances may begin to see soft visual effects, such as a heightened awareness of colors or subtle distortions. This dose allows for introspection while remaining grounded and functional.

Full Dose – 1 g to 2 g

Good For: Those ready for a deeper exploration of their thoughts, emotions, and sensory perceptions. This range is often used for therapeutic purposes or gaining personal insight.

What to Expect: A full-body high accompanied by moderate visual effects, such as objects swaying, fractal patterns, or enhanced vibrancy in colors. Emotional breakthroughs and new perspectives on personal challenges may arise, making it a powerful dose for self-reflection and creative thinking.

Deep dose – 2 g to 3 g

Good For: Those looking for a transformative experience and profound emotional or spiritual insight. This dose is often chosen for deep personal healing, exploring your subconscious, or connecting with nature on a heightened level.

What to Expect: Intense visual and auditory hallucinations, including intricate fractal imagery and immersive soundscapes. A strong sense of connection or “oneness” with people, nature, or the universe is common. At this level, emotions are experienced vividly and intensely. Many trippers report deep emotional processing, with deep revelations about their lives and relationships. This dose requires a safe, supportive environment.

Heroic Dose – 3 g+

Good For: Experienced users seeking a profound, boundary-dissolving journey into the subconscious. This dose is best for exploring deep-seated trauma, uncovering emotional or psychological patterns, or engaging in spiritual practices.

What to Expect: A powerful and immersive experience characterized by overwhelming visuals, distorted time perception, and a sense of detachment from physical reality. Users often report profound insights about themselves, their lives, and the nature of existence. Due to the intensity of this dose, doing preparation, intention-setting, post-journey integration, and a trusted guide or sitter are must-haves.

What to expect in your macrodose journey:

It takes about an hour for the psychedelic effects to kick in, with the full experience lasting between four to six hours. Expect a multi-staged experience:

The Come-Up (First Hour)

During the initial phase, you may start to feel a sense of anticipation or mild discomfort as the effects begin. You may feel nauseous, but it is usually short-lived and can be alleviated with a ginger tea. It’s also normal to feel a bit giddy, yawn, or seek comfort as the body begins to relax into the experience.

The Peak (Two to Four Hours)

As the psilocybin takes root, you’ll enter the peak of your journey. Expect vivid, enhanced visuals — colors may become more vibrant, surfaces might glitter, and textures could appear to shift or move. Time perception will likely feel distorted, making minutes feel like hours. You may experience deep emotional states, ranging from overwhelming joy and bliss to profound feelings of oneness and connection.

In this phase, you may also face challenging emotions or confront unresolved psychological trauma. This can be a time of emotional catharsis, where old patterns are brought to the surface, providing an opportunity for emotional release and transformation. Depending on your dosage, you may experience somatic (body-focused) sensations, cognitive exploration, or problem-solving insights. Everyone’s experience is different and no two journeys will ever be the same.

Come-Down (Final Hours)

As the peak begins to fade, you will enter the come-down phase. For many, this part of the journey is marked by a calming, peaceful sensation. It may feel as though you’re gently easing back into your body, often with a profound sense of relaxation or lightness. The intensity of the experience begins to soften, offering space for reflection.

Afterglow

In the days and weeks following your macrodose experience, you may notice a “afterglow” effect — a sustained positive shift in mood, enhanced clarity, and a more open, expansive mindset. This period of heightened awareness is not just emotional but also physiological, as psilocybin has been shown to promote increased neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. This means that for up to six months post-journey, your brain is more receptive to new insights, behaviors, and thought patterns. The afterglow is a powerful time to integrate the insights from your journey and make lasting changes in how you think, feel, and behave. Read more about integration practices below.

Practical Tips for Your Macrodose Journey

Set & Setting: Start by creating a calm, comfortable space—preferably with a bed or mattress you can relax on. Consider using a blackout eye mask to help you focus inward and curate music specifically chosen to enhance your psychedelic experience. Before starting, set an intention for your journey, as this will help guide the experience. However, be open-minded—remember that the medicine will reveal what you need to see, rather than what you expect or want to see.

Prepare Your Body: 10-15 minutes of gentle stretching or yin yoga before a macrodose can help ground you inti the experience.

Practice Breathwork and Embodiment Exercises: Familiarity with breathwork or meditation before a macrodose can help you stay centered and grounded if difficult emotions or memories come up during your journey.

Safety: Be sure to undertake your journey in a safe setting with a guide or tripsitter that you trust and is able to hold space for you emotionally and assist physically (bathroom trips, etc.) if needed during your journey. If you’re undertaking a solo trip, make sure to inform a trusted person of your plans.

Types of Psilocybin: Your experience with magic mushrooms varies widely depending on the strain of psychoactive mushrooms you choose. Not sure where to start? We recommend Golden Teacher magic mushrooms for beginners and experienced users seeking a balanced, uplifting, and healing experience. Read our Psychedelic Mushroom Guide to learn more about the most common magic mushroom strains and how to choose between them.

Post-Journey: Prepare your home ahead of time so you can return to a calm, cozy environment after your trip. That means a clean, organized space with all the cozy comforts that will make you feel safe and cared for. Have healthy snacks and comfort foods on hand, soft lighting, and minimize noise and bright lights.

Trip Timing: For an extra element of cosmic alignment, time your journey to coincide with a full moon, new moon, solstice, or eclipse as a way to connect to something bigger than yourself. Some users find these trips to be more powerful and expansive.

Frequency of Macrodosing: Macrodose journeys are used for profound healing and should be spaced far enough apart to allow time for integration between journeys. This will vary widely depending on your goals and the context of your journeys, but research suggests 3-4 weeks between macrodoses at a minimum. Consult with a trained psychedelic therapist for help facilitating, integrating, and planning multiple high dose psilocybin journeys.

Integration

Whether doing a micro or macro journey, integration is essential to make the most of your psychedelic experience. What is integration? During your journey, you may see, feel, sense, or intuitively know new information, new perspectives, or other truths. Some of it will make perfect sense immediately, and much of it will take time and curiosity to unpack.

This is where integration comes in: it means unpacking insights and integrating the lessons shown to you by the medicine into your everyday life. It means building new, healthier habits, releasing old patterns and beliefs, and introducing new ways of thinking.

Keep in mind, lessons and insights can be apparent immediately or may take weeks or months to fully emerge and make sense to you. Be patient, stay open to the lessons and insights that arise, and work to integrate these new truths into your life.

Post-journey, many people feel like they have to change their whole life at once; this can lead to overwhelm and frustration. Instead, aim for a 1% improvement every day – small attainable changes add up to profound transformation over time.

Individual Integration Practices

Individual integration can be done through small, realistic daily practices like meditation, breathwork, or journaling, a weekly or monthly commitment like therapy, or can sometimes look like a big one-off (such as writing a letter to a family member).

  • Journaling: Journal about what you were shown, ask yourself why this came up and what it could mean. Don’t judge your thoughts or try to control the message. Just be curious and allow the words and insights to flow.
  • Meditation: Let your thoughts flow. Do not judge or try to quiet them. Simply observe your breath and allow your thoughts to pass through you without getting involved.
  • Therapy: Work with a psychedelic therapist to uncover insights, process emotions, release traumas, and integrate lessons, new behaviours, and thought patterns into your life.
  • Writing Exercises: Write a letter to your younger self – give them the love, reassurance, and acceptance you needed back then.
  • Breathwork: Deep breathing can help to deepen your revelations and ground you in your body.
  • Time in Nature: Post-journey, you will feel extra aware of and connected to nature. Allow yourself to commune with the natural world – walk barefoot in the grass, swim in the river, sit against a tree, and get some morning sunlight as often as you can.

Most importantly, be patient. Sometimes the lessons hit later than you’d imagined. Trust that the lessons will come as they’re meant to, and once you realize them, strive to incorporate them into your everyday life.

 Collective Integration Practices

Collective practices can be incredibly healing for an added sense of belonging, accountability, and shared growth. Some of our favorite ways to connect with others in your integration journey:

Integration Circles

These are safe, confidential spaces where individuals come together to share their psychedelic experiences. In these circles, you can:

  • Reflect on your journey and hear others’ perspectives.
  • Gain valuable insights through shared stories and experiences.
  • Build a supportive network of like-minded individuals.

Many integration circles are facilitated by experienced guides who provide structure and ensure the space remains respectful and constructive.

Group Therapy and Support Groups

Participating in group therapy or specialized support groups can offer more structured guidance for processing your experiences. Often, a group dynamic can be profoundly healing as you connect with others who’ve faced similar challenges.

Service and Community Engagement

Giving back to your community is a powerful way to ground your experiences and channel insights into action. Volunteering, organizing community events, or participating in collective efforts like park cleanups can help foster a sense of purpose, deepen your connection to the outside world, and help build positive relationships that only amplify your growth.

Harm Reduction

 Addiction

Psilocybin mushrooms aren not physically or psychologically addictive, and even Health Canada agrees. Since tolerance builds quickly with frequent use, they don’t have addictive effects or withdrawal symptoms. That said, it’s possible to become emotionally dependent, especially if you use them repeatedly without doing the personal work they are meant to support. Taking the time to integrate your experiences is essential to avoid using them as a way to avoid confronting deeper issues.

Driving

Driving while microdosing psilocybin depends on your experience and comfort level. If dosed correctly, it shouldn’t impair you, but it’s best to avoid driving until you know how it affects you. Some people experience mild side effects like nausea, and external factors like sleep or diet can influence your experience. Remember to also consider ethical and legal implications, as psilocybin is still illegal in many places and may be prohibited at your workplace.

Mental Health Precautions:

  • Psychedelics are not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of bipolar disorder or the spectrum of psychotic disorders, including but not limited to schizophrenia and psychosis. Please consult with a healthcare professional
  • Certain medications, like SSRIs, SNRIs, and anxiety medications, can reduce psilocybin’s effects.

Managing Expectations

Ultimately, any psychedelic or plant medicine is just a tool—it’s not a quick fix or magic bullet. Whatever intentions or challenges brought you to the medicine, getting to the root of it is where the healing work begins.

The medicine takes the blinders off and reveals what you need to see: the thought patterns, choices, coping mechanisms, and behaviors that need to be addressed in your life to be your happiest, healthiest, most balanced self. Once you see these patterns, it’s up to you to make the necessary changes. Of course, psilocybin is a significant help during this process—it literally helps to wire these new pathways into your brain for sustained change.

Just like in therapy, the goal is not to keep you reliant on the medicine forever, but to provide support and tools so that you can continue to cope and function in healthier ways without relying on an external source. For many, this is why they turn to psychedelics as a last resort after years on prescription medication and find success in discontinuing their prescriptions. It’s a constantly evolving journey, and for some, this means they’ve received what they needed from the medicine after a few months and stop temporarily or indefinitely. For others, it becomes a long-term healing support.

An important thing to note: psilocybin acts as an unspecific amplifier. This means that whatever is going on inside—be it repressed emotions, anxiety, or unresolved trauma—can become amplified so that you will notice it. What is normally a low-level emotion may become a more pronounced feeling of anxiety, sadness, or joy. Once it’s brought to your awareness, you can explore what might be causing it and change it. This process can be incredibly liberating, as it’s like seeing the truth in glaring full color.

Once we see the truth, we can do things differently. And for those who truly want to heal and grow, the ability to face and address the truth is a crucial step.

Magic Mushroom Dosing FAQ

How do I determine the correct dose for me?

Finding your dose depends on factors like individual sensitivity, experience with psychedelics, and your desired outcome. As with all psychedelic drugs, we recommend starting with a lower dose, assess your reaction, and slowly increase your dose if needed.

How often can I safely take psilocybin mushrooms?

For macrodoses, it’s recommended to wait at least 3–4 weeks between sessions to allow for proper integration and to prevent tolerance buildup. For microdosing, protocols range from 2 to 5 days per week with regular breaks to maintain effectiveness and prevent tolerance.

Does body weight affect psilocybin dosing?

While some earlier studies dosed psilocybin based on body weight (e.g., 0.2–0.4 mg/kg), recent research suggests that individual sensitivity and experience matter more than body weight in determining the correct dose.

Can I take magic mushrooms with my prescription medication?

James Fadiman has created a list for drug interactions with magic mushrooms.

Can you take magic mushrooms while on SSRIs?

If you’re taking SSRIs or MAOIs, you might notice that magic mushrooms don’t feel as strong. That’s because both antidepressants and psilocybin work on serotonin receptors. While there’s no solid evidence that combining them is dangerous, the experience might be less intense. Everyone’s body reacts differently, so it’s always a good idea to check with a medical professional before mixing psilocybin with your medications.

Magic mushrooms are powerful tools for self-discovery and healing. They amplify emotions, illuminate subconscious patterns, and offer profound insights—but the real work begins with you. With proper dosing, preparation, and integration, you can unlock their full potential for growth and transformation.
