About Sero

Sero is short for Serotonin.

Biologically, it’s functions are multifaceted, but it is most commonly known for impacting mood, cognition, reward centers, learning, and memory.

The group of tryptamines we call “the classic psychedelics” (like magic mushrooms) have a strong affinity with one particular type of serotonin receptor, called the 5-HT2A.  In a nutshell, psychedelics resemble serotonin closely enough that they attach themselves to this receptor and activate it.

We are based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Individuals who deeply care about the accessibility of magic mushrooms.  They have transformed our lives as a tool to deeply explore the root causes of trauma and lead to permanent healing.  Due to the nature of our business, we keep our personal identities private.

They are. To us, ethical and sustainable business practice is a no brainer.  We grow locally and mostly source locally.  All of our mushrooms are organically grown and cultivated using safe and sustainable farming practices in Canada.  If a product isn’t available locally due to its authenticity or availability, we source from good people.  All of our partner’s values align with ours too – we make sure to vet for this in every area of our business.

As an example of this, our cacao is sourced from an eco-forest  in Guatemala that honours both the Indigenous people that have cultivated cacao for thousands of years and the earth and ecosystems in which they are grown.

Finally, everything is manufactured by us, by hand.  Running a business this way takes a lot of extra leg work but the juice is worth the squeeze.  If you have a question about a specific area of our business and approach please send us a note at [email protected].

Yep. Currently, all ingredients in Sero’s products do not contain any animal bi-products.  Our capsules are vegan too.  In the future should any of our products contain non-vegan ingredients (eg. bee pollen) we’ll clearly mark that out.

Nope. We’re bootstrapping Sero with nothing but our personal savings, commitment and love.  We do this to ensure the values, ethics, process, and product remain controlled by a tight and thoughtful group.

Colloquially speaking, being in a flow state is also known as being “in the zone”.  In positive psychology, a flow state is the mental experience of being fully immersed, focused, and energized to work on a particular task.

It has been shown that microdosing on magic mushrooms can help one attain a state of flow much easier. You can read more about flow states here.

Yep, all of our products are handled with latex free gloves.

The World of Psilocybin

Magic mushrooms contain a compound called psilocybin that, when ingested, is converted into psilocin.  This chemical activates serotonin receptors in your brain, triggering vivid hallucinations, a sense of euphoria, and changes in your perception of space and time.

Our doses refer to the amount of magic mushrooms per capsule or square of Star Bar.

In a nutshell, classical psychedelics like magic mushrooms cause parts of your brain to communicate that normally don’t communicate.  This often leads to creating new positive connections.

Depending on the experience you’re after, your dose can vary greatly.  Dosage will also vary person-to-person as psychedelics are a highly individualized experience.

That being said, there are some typical guidelines to magic mushroom doses.  Again, the experience will be different for everyone so please only use this as a general guide.  If you opt to go with a higher dose be mindful of your set, setting and safety prior to your trip. Please note that the mg refers to the amount of magic mushroom in a dose, versus psilocybin.

MICRO (50mg – 400mg) – This dose is so low it is safe for any time use (including during work, if you’re a parent, etc.).  You will not experience any hallucinations.  It is best known for its impact on things like mood, focus, and memory.  You can read more about microdosing here.

MUSEUM (400mg – 1g) – This would be your social dose.  High enough you can feel a warm glow, but low enough you’re still fully present and sociable.  Experiment with this dose before you are in a social situation, however.  Some people “feel it” more than others.

COMMON (1 – 2g) – Now we’re getting into the types of “trips” you’re likely used to hearing about.  This light dose offers consistent sensorial accentuation, enhanced visuals, deep thinking and a nice body high.

DIVER (2 – 3.5 g) – After 2g you can expect interactive thought patterns, visual and auditory hallucinations, diminishing ego, heightened sense of self, perspective changes.

STRONG (3.5 – 5g – done under supervision) – This dose should be done with deep intention and preparation for transcendental thoughts and outer body experiences.  You can also expect fractals and sacred hallucinations, time and space distortion, and ego dissolution.

HEROIC (5+ g – done under supervision) – Beyond 5g you can expect a completely dissolved sense of self, blinding visual hallucinations, outer body experiences, intense catharsis, primordial information downloads.  We would not recommend approaching this high of a dose to anyone who is not experienced with using psychedelics.

As in die?  No.  According to the Global Drug Survey “Magic mushrooms are one of the safest drugs in the world”.  You may experience nausea, fatigue, headaches or you may mentally feel distressed.  If this happens to you, know that this feeling won’t last forever.  Breathe, change your setting, tell a guide/friend how you’re feeling and continue to remind yourself that this feeling will pass.  If you’d like to read more about how to manage an uncomfortable trip, here is a great article.

When you’re not doing a specific task, a part of our brain called the default mode network (DMN) takes over.  Think of daydreaming — it’s mindless, automatic thinking.

The DMN has been found to be particularly overactive in certain mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive disorders – this can be harmful because the automatic thought patterns occurring can be distressing (eg. “I’m not thin enough.”, “I’m a failure.”, “I’m an embarrassment.”, etc.).

When you take psilocybin, activity within the DMN is significantly decreased while connectivity in the rest of the brain increases.  This shift has particularly strong therapeutic potential as it allows users to change negative thought patterns.  The individual is able to slow down and work though what they’re feeling.

To explore this further, we encourage you to investigate the following:

  • This study by Imperial College London that assessed the impact of psilocybin-assisted therapy on twelve patients with severe depression.  The results demonstrated that psilocybin-assisted therapy was able to dramatically reduce their depression scores.
  • This follow-up study that suggests the therapeutic impact of psilocybin is linked to its ability to ‘reset’ the DMN.
  •

Finally, this study investigates how psychedelics produce increases in psychological flexibility – offering further explanation as to why psychedelic users see decreases in depression and anxiety.

Integration refers to the work you do following your transformational psychedelic experience.  Using integration techniques will help you explore and understand what you felt or saw.  Following a psychedelic session, you can integrate the lessons through various grounding exercises such as meditation, yoga, making art, breathwork, journaling, working with a therapist, speaking with a friend – this list is long and personalized.

Magic mushrooms are capable of revealing deep personal insights, transcendent realizations, and indescribable connections to the world around us.  This can lead to long-lasting changes in our outlooks and be a powerful tool in working through things like trauma, depression, or anxiety.  This is why we love mushrooms.  It’s also why we recommend checking off “the big three” before your trip:

Set – Aka your mindset. Are you coming into the experience expecting a challenging encounter or do you have a constructive intention in mind? What questions do you want answered?  What would you like to explore?  Sero’s formulations have been created specifically to guide uplifting experiences, but this does not negate the importance of your mindset.

Setting – This refers to your environment.  Are you in a comfortable space?  Who are you with – an experienced guide or close friends?  Do you have everything you need for a good experience?  Your setting can impact your energy and headspace.

Dose – Be intentional with your dosing.  Do you want a subtle, feel good trip (250mg – 1g)?  Or would you like to start the deeper dive (going to 1g and beyond).  Depending on the dose, that deep dive inside your psyche can be very revealing, but it’s important you have the tools to handle that.  We’ll do our best to share everything we know.

Paul Stamets is a speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher and entrepreneur who has dedicated his career to the mushroom.  He is an industry leader in fungi: habitat, medicinal use, and production.

Paul is known for a dosing protocol recommendation of five days on, two days off.  Again, when it comes to protocol some experimentation may be required to figure out what works best for you.

In the world of microdosing, Paul is credited with developing a nootropic PSI-vitamin complex that is formulated for epigenetic neurogenesis.  This formula, made up of Psilocybin, Lion’s Mane mushrooms and Niacin is known for promoting memory and cognition, and supporting the regeneration of neurons responsible for visual and auditory functioning.  Our microdosing stack Connect Four follows Paul’s same recipe.

Dr. James Fadiman is a psychologist, writer and co-founder of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, later called Sofia University.  He is well known and celebrated in the community for his extensive work in the field of psychedelic research, specifically in microdosing.  His book ‘The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide: Safe, Therapeutic and Sacred Journeys’ is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to dive in.

Dr. Fadiman’s dosing protocol for magic mushrooms is to take one dose, every three days.

Dr. Rick Doblin is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS – see below).  Rick has been expanding psychedelic medicine for decades – you can find a detailed bio of his outstanding work on the MAPS website.  Rick’s “professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist.”  We’re indebted to Rick and the entire MAPS team.

MAPS stands for Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.  Founded in 1986, MAPS is a non-profit research and educational organization that develops medical, legal and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics and marijuana.  We highly recommended following their Instagram and supporting MAPS Canada.

Therapsil is a non-profit coalition in Canada that advocates for legal access to psilocybin therapy for palliative care.

Therapsil created history on August 4th, 2020 when four Canadians battling incurable cancer were approved by the federal Minister of Health to use psilocybin therapy in the treatment of their end-of-life distress.  These four patients marked the first individuals to receive a legal exemption from the Canadian Drugs and Substances Act, under Section 56, to access psilocybin therapy.  Therapsil is actively accepting new patients experiencing end of life distress seeking an exemption.  Support Therapsil by following their Instagram.

Ingredients

Generally, when someone mentions the term  “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms,” they are referring to the Psilocybe Cubensis species. Golden Teacher is a popular strain of Psilocybe Cubensis.  Golden Teachers grow naturally across North America, Asia, and South American countries, though the species was first documented in 1906 in Cuba.  Since then, the name Golden Teacher has become ubiquitous with magic mushrooms.

‘Golden’ derives from the golden colour of the caps.
‘Teacher’ for their ability to provide guided revelations that remain long after the experience.

The experience is generally classified as euphoric and uplifting.  We treat all mushrooms with reverence but this elegant mushroom is one of the best teachers we’ve ever had.

All of our mushrooms are organically grown and cultivated using safe and sustainable farming practices in Canada.

If a product isn’t available locally due to its authenticity or availability, we source from good people.  All of our partner’s values align with ours too – we make sure to vet for this in every area of our business.  For example, our cacao is sourced from a Guatemalan eco-forest that honours both the Indigenous people that have cultivated them for thousands of years and the earth and ecosystems in which they are grown.  To learn more about Cacao Source, check out their website and  Instagram channel.

Our products are free from allergens: gluten, soy, wheat, eggs, dairy, yeast, and preservatives.  All our products are non-GMO and non-irradiated.

You can! You can stack (or take multiple of) one product to reach your desired dose.

For example, you bought 125mg capsules of View Master and would like to increase your dose to 250mg. You can take two 125mg capsules of View Master to make your new desired dose of 250mg. Or, say you were looking for 200mg of View Master, in which case you could purchase 125mg dose and 75mg dose and take one of each.

You can! There are absolutely no issues with mixing our microdose blends. We actually designed the ingredients in our collection with this in mind.

For example, you can compound the mood boosting effects of Lite Brite with the increased focus of View Master. This could look like 125mg of Lite Brite with 75mg of View Master. Again, you’re welcome to explore different combinations to see what works best for you. As always, we would love to hear your feedback on your journey! And if you don’t see something you’re looking for, let us know.

Absolutely! Our blends come in three dose offerings (currently 75 mg, 125 mg and 250 mg), while one Star Bar square is a 250 mg dose. This dose refers to the amount of Golden Teacher magic mushrooms, not the amount of psilocybin. Our blends include other complimentary ingredients such as adaptogens and medicinal mushrooms, and the amounts of these added ingredients is consistent across all of our dose options.

In other words, the ingredients and their amounts are the same regardless of which dose you choose of a particular blend – all that will vary is the amount (mg) of magic mushrooms.

Common Concerns & Inquiries

Experiencing nausea while macrodosing is very common. Many people will experience feeling nauseous within the first hour of a macro dose on the come-up.

With microdosing, feeling nausea is far less common. With that being said, it does happen – some people are simply more sensitive than others! A common tip we’ve seen work very well for people who experience ill while microdosing (typically just within the first hour after taking their dose)  is to eat a good-sized, healthy meal before you dose and also, take your microdose with a big glass of water. This usually does the trick to negate this feeling!

While uncommon, we’ve noticed when it does occur, it’s is typically when people just start microdosing. In our research, the advice notes that in many cases, the person taking the microdose really needed to rest. This sounds vague, but it is said that the mushrooms will give you what you need, so if you’re feeling tired after microdosing, try to rest (if that’s possible with your lifestyle) as your body may be asking for it. If your lifestyle does not allow for a restful day, perhaps microdosing in the evening would work best for you. A major thing to note with this reaction is that typically if you feel tired from microdosing in the beginning, this is a symptom that doesn’t last. After you’ve dosed a few times this tends to go away.

The research is still very new in this area and the decision to microdose while pregnant or breastfeeding is very personal. Some are comfortable with it, some are not.

There is one animal reproduction study that has been completed on magic mushrooms and reproduction.  The results showed no increased risk of birth defects. This article leads to this study plus two others – you may find it helpful.

As for breastfeeding, there are no official studies although most anecdotal evidence suggests little to no risk. Our mushrooms are naturally grown, chemically free, and in sterile conditions so there’s no issues there.

There is a lot of new research emerging around this topic, so please check back or do your own research – it’s an exciting time with promising reports.

Early research reports that psychedelics could reorganize pain pathways in the brain alleviating somatic issues. The research is still in its infancy, so it may be best to try it for yourself to see if you notice an impact from microdosing. This link will take you to a source with more information.

In the most basic terms – taking psilocybin helps us access our emotions, some of which we may normally repress (often subconsciously). Magic mushrooms work with our brain chemistry to bring certain emotions to the surface. In contrast, an antidepressant drug works to  maintain mental balance by inhibiting serotonin (some refer to this as “numbing” the painful emotions). We articulate this to display how magic mushrooms help us work through our emotions by helping us feel our feelings, while other drugs may help us manage our feelings by not allowing us to feel them at all.

While this process can be very challenging at times, the beneficial aspect of taking psilocybin is that it helps expedite the healing process. If we never feel our feelings, we’ll never be able to work on them. As mentioned, emotions coming to the surface may be uncomfortable, but in the big picture it’s an incredible opportunity for introspection and supported growth.

With this thought in mind, an important perspective is to try and view being triggered as a gift. This may be a challenge, but if you can position a trigger as a nagging emotion that is asking for your attention, you can use the trigger to work on yourself. There’s this common saying: “your triggers are your biggest teachers” – this video does a great job at explaining this process.

Something we like to do when we get triggered is to write about it. Describing what happened (the event or memory), how it made us feel, when we’d felt like that other times in our lives, where we learned to react like that, etc. This often helps us understand ourselves better and have more self compassion.

With time, if you begin to notice patterns in your triggers, you can continue to work on specific areas of your life with the help of microdosing. With time and work, you’ll notice you feel triggered less and less which is a beautiful feeling.

Psychedelics show so much promise when it comes to supporting mood.

In terms of SSRIs, James Fadiman is one of the leading researchers on microdosing.  He has created a list of prescription drugs which people reported no issues while microdosing.  If your drug is on this list, it is deemed safe according to this report by James Fadiman. Most SSRIs are on this list and are safe to microdose with.

One tip we’ve heard from our community members who microdose on SSRIs is if you do not respond to 125 mg, taking a higher dose is reported to be effective. For example, our 250 mg microdose or a square of our Star Bar (250 mg), or you could blend 125 mg dose and 75 mg dose for a total dose of 200 mg.
